What you need to know now
What has changed in DIN 13164 and when will the change take effect?
The current version of the standard is DIN 13164:2022 and has been valid since February
1st, 2022. The content has been expanded to include 2 type I medical face masks or better in
accordance with DIN 14683 (not FFP2 masks). At the same time, one of two triangular
bandages was removed and the dressing sheet BR 40 x 60 cm was dispensed with.
Is there a transition period until the new version of DIN 13164 is finally used?
Yes, this runs until January 31st, 2023.
Is DIN alone authoritative, or do additional laws or regulations have to be
observed in order for the standard to become binding?
The DIN standard is basically a voluntary agreement. The DIN 13164 standard becomes
binding in connection with the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO), which refers
to the standard. This is to be adapted to the current status of DIN 13164.
What does the transition period mean for end users and retailers?
End users may purchase commercially available car cases or bags without
restrictions until January 31st, 2023. There is no obligation to replace or supplement
existing boxes. After January 31st, 2023, only boxes and bags according to the current
standard may be sold. (see also BVMED report of February 1st, 2022).
How can I be on the safe side with regard to DIN 13164 in my vehicle?
With a valid first aid kit with additional medical masks in the car you are definitely on
